The Town of Southborough hired our firm in January 2001 to evaluate educational and physical capabilities of the exist-ing Woodward Elementary School. Due to structural issues, the recommendation to the Town was to demolish the existing 1954 building and construct a new two-story building within the current footprint. This allowed the site design to preserve the current soccer, softball and volley ball fields, while creating much needed additional parking.The new two-story, 70,000 square foot building houses 460 students in Grades 2 and 3 in 20 standard classrooms. Specialized rooms for art, music, small group rooms, a computer lab, and an additional 20-student collaborative room are included in the design. A centrally located two-story atrium connects the two-story classroom wing with the core facilities on the first and second floors, designed to accommodate community access during non-school hours.
